A sad incident dubbed the “split face diving accident” , also known as the manara promenade accident ,has once again resurfaced online, capturing the attention of netizens across various social media platforms. Originally shared on Reddit by user u/zombiedub over a decade ago, the story and its accompanying gruesome video which went viral, still continues to evoke strong reactions from viewers.
According to the reddit post, the split-face diving accident occurred in June 2009 and involved a 16-year-old resident of Beirut. The tragic incident unfolded near the Manara Promenade, opposite the American University of Beruit (AUB). In the resurfaced video, the victim’s friend is seen successfully diving into the sea from a height of over 40 feet. However, tragedy struck when the teenager attempted his dive, colliding with the concrete surface before plunging into the ocean below.According to experts, for anyone to be able to make the successful dive, One has to sprint away from the railing in order to land away from the stone ledge on the bottom where fishermen usually fish.
The video captures the catastrophic aftermath of the diving accident. As the boy struck the concrete, a bystander at the scene could be heard urgently calling for help from the Civil Defense in Arabic. “Oh my God! Oh my God! Someone call the Civil Defense”. The civil defense is an emergency rescue organization made up of volunteers, similar to the Red Cross.
Subsequently, the footage transitions to scenes from an American University Hospital emergency room. The second cell phone video was shot in the bright-lit ER at the American University Hospital (AUH) less than a quarter mile away.
According to the Reddit post and khinsider, doctors made efforts to stabilize the boy’s facial injuries to ensure an open airway by stitching his deep and severe wounds.But, despite all their efforts, the teenager succumbed to his injuries after two days of intensive care.

Additionally, the inclusion of warnings at the video’s outset, coupled with instrumental music and shaky cellphone footage, added to the unsettling nature of the content.
